COVID-19 Update at RAS

 

Tuesday, March 24

In compliance with Governor Inslee's latest announcement, we are changing our pick-up/drop-off time this week to tomorrow, Wednesday the 25th from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This will be the last pick-up/drop-off until the "stay home" mandate is lifted on Monday, April 6. There will be no pick-up/drop-off on Sunday the 29th.

Here's what you can expect tomorrow:

  1. Gloved RAS staff will be outside to assist you.
  2. Pull along the curb (you can stay in your car!) and tell the RAS staff member your child's name and their teacher.
  3. The teacher will collect your packet and pass it to you through the window.
  4. We all miss each other and are desperate for social interaction, but please don't gather on the playground or in the parking lot. 
  5. THIS PICK-UP IS OPTIONAL. All teachers have some material online and if you are not comfortable picking up new material, your student will not be penalized. 
  • Mrs. Veverka's and Mr. Lang's classes have everything they need and will not need to do a pick-up.
  • Mrs. Burseth's/Mrs. Anderson's math classes will have materials delivered to them. 
  • Mrs. Gish only has items for Algebra. Science and Gish Bible are online.

Every day is a new chance for practicing our problem-solving skills!

 

Wednesday, March 18

We're 48 hours in. Are you surviving? We continue to take very seriously our responsibility for educating your child and it's certainly a work in progress to figure out the best fit for each student. Please give your teacher feedback. Is there enough work? Too much? Is it accessible? Is it valuable? We strive to be able to course-correct quickly so we're anxious to hear from you.

A few items to note:

1. To make things more convenient for parents and to eliminate as much cross-contamination as possible, we are assigning Sunday as both the turn-in (drop-off) and pick-up day. Teacher bins and packets will be outside on the sidewalk, spread out by grade level along the front of the school. Because of Spring Break, our first Sunday pick-up will be Sunday, March 29 from 3-6 p.m.. So teachers can get lessons returned to students in a timely manner, we are asking that any current drop-offs (specifically for Math) happen THIS Friday, since there will be no pick-up/drop-off on Sunday the 22nd. Confused yet? Try this:

  • Friday, March 20: Drop off math (or other) assignments so teachers can grade over the break.
  • Sunday, March 29: Pick-up/Drop-off
  • Sunday, April 5: Pick-up/Drop-off
  • Sunday April 12: Pick-up/Drop-off
  • Sunday, April 19: Pick-up/Drop-off
  • Sunday, April 26: No pick-up/drop-off because we plan to be back in school on April 27 (looking for the fingers crossed emoji...)

Note that the RAS office is open M-Th, 8-4 p.m. and Friday from 8-12. You can always drop off during those hours. You don't have to wait until Sunday.

2. College Place Public Schools will be distributing breakfast and lunch (grab and go) meals to school-age children. Each day a quality breakfast and lunch will be provided at one time. For the safety and health of everyone, meals will be delivered to your car and there is no need to get out. RAS students are eligible for these meals as well. You do not have to attend CPPS programs to benefit.

  • Locations: Davis Elementary Rear Bus Drop Off/Pickup Driveway, Sager/CPHS Sager Main Entrance, Valle Lindo (Inspire Development Center)
  • Time: 11:30-1:00 daily Tuesday, March 17-April 24 (no meals April 6-10 due to Spring Break)

3. At the bottom of our e-days page, we've added a few suggestions of extra resources. These are totally optional, but are fun ideas that teachers have come across or that have been shared with us for everything from virtual field trips to online art lessons. Have you found something super cool that you'd like to share? Send me the link and I'll add it to our list.

4. Same for emotional support. Check out our website for ideas from our school counselor, Mrs. Lofthouse, or other online resources to help talk with your kids about coronavirus.

5. I post daily announcements on our website with an encouraging thought and the question of the day. I'd love for you to share these with your kids!

6. Don't forget that you can schedule a weekly 1:1 tutoring session (30 minutes) with your child's teacher. Connect your teacher directly to schedule an appointment.

We understand that this pandemic is an ever-changing, fluid situation and we have no choice but to be flexible and adaptable. While the items above are current NOW, who knows what tomorrow holds? We will continue to update you if anything changes with our processes.

Monday, March 16

Myth #1: We will be going to school into July in order to make up all of these days.

Fact: Because we're doing the e-days, we will continue to end our school year on schedule on June 5, 2020. Teachers are working hard to make sure that we're providing, relevant, creative e-day content that will leave no holes and continue your child on their academic path. Check out the e-day plans on our website.

Myth #2: We are assigning work over Spring Break.

Fact: Here is our confirmed schedule:

  • March 17-20: e-day academics
  • March 23-27: Spring Break. No academics required - please rest!
  • March 30-April 24: e-day academics

Myth #3: Parents don't get a refund for lunches prepaid for the year.

Fact: If you put money down for a daily or monthly card, that money will apply to future lunches yet this year. If you prepaid the entire year, we will reimburse you for the lunches your student won't be able to use in March/April.

Myth #4: My child will be relegated to the same boring soccer balls or paperbacks we have at home if they want any fun.

Fact: During the Sunday packet pick-up/drop-off (every Sunday, 3-6 p.m.) PE equipment is available for check out. Try the pickle ball paddles, the frisbees, or some juggling equipment! Library books are also available to borrow. Email Mrs. Campbell (audrey.campbell@rogersschool.org) with your request and she'll have the books ready for you. Check out the library webpage for ideas.

Myth #5: I won't be able to get the early registration rate (due March 30) because I spent all my money on toilet paper.

Fact: We've extended our "early registration" rates through the end of April. Families who register for next year by April 30 will still be eligible for the $50 savings per student.

Myth #6: I'm all alone in this.

Fact: Our school counselor, Tricia Lofthouse, is at RAS and available for 1:1 conferences with students or parents. Connect with Mrs. Lofthouse directly at (tricia.lofthouse@rogersschool.org) Also, check out ideas and suggestions on our website. There will be someone in the office from 8-4 each day. We are here to answer your questions and support you however we can.

 

Sunday, March 15

Governor Jay Inslee has closed all public & private K-12 schools effective March 17 through April 24, at minimum. Rogers Adventist School will be compliant with this closure. 

During this unprecedented situation, RAS teachers pledge the following:

  1. Valuable Educational Experience with Continuity
  2. Amazing Communication
  3. Awesome Customer Service

Here's what parents can expect:

  1. The RAS front office will hold regular office hours from 8-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8-12 on Friday.
  2. Daily announcements will be recorded and posted here.
  3. E-day education will be a combination of online games, resources, and activities along with hard copy lessons, books, packets, and activities.
  4. Teachers will post the weekly lesson plan on their websites. Find that info here or on the teacher pages. The plan for the entire week will be posted by 8 a.m. Monday morning and will be broken down into daily chunks. Students may work ahead if they choose to.
  5. Packets of hard copy lessons will be available in classroom drop boxes (located in the front lobby) between 3-6 p.m. every Sunday. This is also where parents can drop off lessons to be graded and returned. This is a two way drop-off/pick-up system. Teachers will let parents know if there are new items for pick-up.
  6. Small groups are not allowed to meet. However, we are allowed to have 1:1 teacher-student interactions. Teachers will publish their office hours and parents are invited to schedule a 1:1 tutoring session with their child's teacher for 30 minutes each week. This is optional, but available to any student who needs help understanding a project or more specific attention on a lesson. These sessions are by appointment only so we can ensure that there are not multiple students at the same session.
  7. In addition to daily/weekly posted plans, each teacher will send a weekly update to parents about upcoming lessons and other important information.
  8. Administration will continue to send a weekly update to keep everyone informed.
  9. While there will be a healthy mix of online and hard copy lessons, each student will at some point need access to a computer. If your student does not have access to a device, please contact Mrs. Bryant to arrange to borrow one from RAS.
  10. If you know of a family who needs help providing lunches or other meals for their family, please contact Mrs. Bryant. There are resources that we can provide.
  11. Is your child struggling with worry or emotional stress in reference to COVID-19 or other issues? Please contact Mrs. Bryant and she can connect you with counseling options.
  12. It's so important that we stay connected as a school family. Please send Mrs. Bryant pictures or stories from your adventures at home! We want to keep everyone posted on our family happenings!

Friday, March 13

Governor Jay Inslee has closed all public & private K-12 schools effective March 17 through April 24, at minimum. Rogers Adventist School will be compliant with this closure. RAS students should plan to attend school on Monday, March 16 for lessons, updates, and to retrieve items necessary for instruction at home. If your student will not be able to attend on Monday, please let your child's teacher know and we will arrange to get the materials to you.

RAS will continue to educate students throughout this closure. It will just be different. It will be flexible. It will be something we've not done before, but RAS teachers are committed to continuity in education and will embrace this challenge. Teachers will be meeting with Administration this Sunday to formalize their plan and parents will be notified.

We understand how inconvenient this will be, especially for families with parents unable to work remotely. RAS teachers are going to do everything within their power to make this unfortunate situation as workable as possible.
